What kind of learner am I? In school, some of my teachers never knew why I could not understand certain concepts during lectures. This is because I am a visual learner. I need to see things to really and truly understand them. I am good at math because the teachers write the problems on the board and work out the problems with you. I was not too good in biology because the teacher would just stand in front of the class for 45 minutes and lecture and I could not process the information in my head. I am also the type of learner that just worries about what is on the test; therefore, I only learn that material. This is partially my fault, but also a lot of fault is to blame on the teachers. I remember one specific incident that happened during my junior year of high school. Junior year my school just started pre and post tests and the teachers had to show the percent growth which would basically reflect on the teacher and how effective they are. Obviously the students did not do well on the post test because we were being tested on material that we did not learn yet. The pre-test also did not count toward our grade. The post-test not only counted towards our grade, but like I said before it reflected on the teacher and how well they were teaching. Anyway, so I was in US History II and my teacher gave us a study guide for the post-test which was allowed. We would work on it in class and the day before the test he gave us all the answers to the review. He then told us that the review was the exact test for tomorrow and that we would memorize it. Being me and worrying about doing well, I only memorized the answers in the exact order. Sure enough the next day we got the test and it was a spitting image if the review. I obviously got a 100 and o did basically the entire class. What really blew my mind though was the fact that my teacher told us if we had any questions to raise our hand and we would have to ask the question out loud. I remember this one kid did not know the a question about the Soviet Union and he asked my teacher. My teacher just gave out the answer like it was nothing. So obviously once this happened kids were asking questions left and right because they knew he would give us the answer. Yes it is the teacher's fault, but then I also blame administration because if a teacher is effective, but kids just do not want to listen then the teacher gets poorly effective which could risk them their job. Anyway so after I memorized the information for a test I would basically throw the information away. In school, there was always so much pressure on getting good grades so I did what I had to do to achieve the good grades. If schools would focus less on the grade and more on getting us to really know and understand the material I think it would be more beneficial. I could learn for fun instead of always having to stress out about the information that I needed to know to be successful on the test. I hope college will make me a deep learner. I want to read beyond the text and I want to be curious and I want to look deeper into the topics. I want to enjoy learning and not stress.
